The Dr. John M. Gillis Memorial Lodge believes that every individual has the right to a lifestyle that includes promotion of health, promotion of individuality and autonomy, and a sense of well-being, which is to be provided by fully qualified professional staff who will deliver care using a holistic approach.
It would be ideal if all seniors in our communities could be taken care of in their own homes. However, as we all know, this is not possible for a number of different reasons. And so…we have community Care and Nursing facilities. The owner and staff of the Dr. John M. Gillis Memorial Lodge believe that a Community Care facility and Nursing facility should provide a haven of comfort and caring, where seniors can enjoy their twilight years; a community home where all residents are loved and cared for as they would be by their families in their own home. Here we believe that every resident is a unique individual, with his or her own needs and wants and we strive to fulfill these needs on an individual basis.
The right to be informed of his/her rights as a resident of the facility. The right to be informed of the procedures and remedies available to him/her and the care. The right to voice grievances, without interference or reprisal, when his/her rights as a resident have been violated. The right to be free from both mental and physical abuse and from unreasonable chemical and physical restraints. The right to confidential treatment of his/her personal and medical records and any other records which contain personal information. The right to have privacy in caring for personal needs and in treatment. The right to meet with and participate in activities of social, religious and community groups at his/her discretion and to communicate privately in writing with the person of his/her choice, to receive and communicate with visitors (with due regard to the rights of other residents), and the request to terminate a visit at any time.
History of Gillis Lodge
The Dr. John M. Gillis Memorial Lodge, is a privately owned organization that was established in 1987. The owner of the Lodge is Douglas MacKenzie. The original home was owned by the late Dr. John M. Gillis and his wife Edna MacLeod. The home was purchased from Edna and Ernest MacLeod by Douglas and Joan Mackenzie, and Donald and Doris MacDonald. There was an extension added to the existing home to be able to accommodate thirteen nursing care beds and twenty-one community care beds. Following the construction of the facility, the Lodge was officially opened on July 9, 1988 at 2:00 PM, with the unveiling of the Dr. John M. Gillis Memorial plaque. Another extension was added in July of 1997, which then enabled the Lodge to accommodate forty-one nursing care beds and twenty-one community care beds. An extension was added in March 2010, which enabled the Lodge to accommodate 68 nursing care beds and 14 community care beds. The latest extension added recently can now accommodate 114 residents, 88 which are nursing care and 30 community care beds. The Lodge provides multi-disciplinary care using a holistic approach, to individuals requiring long term care.
